From a young age, we are taught the concept of “Work / Life Balance”. But, what does this actually mean?
Isn’t work just one aspect of life? Do we really want to give work and our j-o-b’s this much attention to our life?
I believe the system is flawed. The work/life balance model is broken. The new model is SOUL/Life Balance.
Work to Live
Don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking “work” in any way. We need to work to live, but as my Grandfather whom I never met used to say to my Father and in turn was passed down to me — “We work to live, we don’t live to work”.
It’s when our careers take over our lives that the work/life balance becomes all consuming and we lose sight of what really matters to us. For this reason, I believe that we need to consider a shift in one of our core beliefs to put a stronger emphasis on the soul.
Why This is Important
As human beings, we are consistently balancing our materialistic lives along with our spiritual lives. The materialistic life is living on the surface as I call it. There’s nothing wrong with being on the surface or purchasing goods to make us happy. In fact, the reality is our culture depends on consumption for economic growth. We are bombarded with this programming from birth and it is this way so that the system stays strong.
The reality is our culture depends on consumption for economic growth.
However, despite living in an era with everything at our fingertips depression is at a high for unexplained reasons. Suicide alone is at it’s highest point in 50 years and the second leading cause of death in Americans under 35 years old. This is SERIOUS, we need owe it to ourselves to have open discussions about depression and to take the necessary steps to reprogram our youth to be more in touch spiritually.
The Eastern cultures have a heavy focus on spiritualism over materialism. While in the West we have an overabundance of materialism and a noticeable lack of spiritualism.
I believe we owe it to our youth to shift our teachings from work/life balance to SOUL/Life Balance. Work is just a component of life. With this shift, we will create a more conscious era for the human race.
Final Thoughts
But, these are just my thoughts. I’ve always naturally questioned everything since I was young. AND the whole 9–5 thing never resonated with me. I never understood why we would put such a strong emphasis of our being into working. Isn’t the point of life to live?
It’s for this reason that with the principles my parents raised me with, along with reading the books “Think & Grow Rich” and “The 4 Hour Work Week” that I have built a career that allows me the freedom to live my life on my terms.
Recently, I wrote my own book (blueprint) on how to live your life on your terms called “The Written Goal”.
However, this is just my take — what’s your take?
Do you think we need to make this shift? If not, why not?
