Have you ever felt like life is just passing you by?
If this is a feeling that resonates with you, it’s possible that you’re filling your time with distractions rather than experiences.
I know that for myself a lot of my depression came from filling my time with distractions.
Let’s talk about what a distraction is and what it is not.
What is a Distraction?
Call me skeptical, call me a conspiracy theorist or whatever you’d like. But, I’m of the belief that the majority of our pop culture is to keep us distracted.
Sports is the perfect example. I grew up a Golden State Warriors fan. I’m talking mid-90’s to early 2000’s when they were lucky to win 20 games in an 82 game season. Whereas for the past 5+ years, the Warriors flipped their record and now are winning around 60+ games a season. The point is for a long-time fan like myself I should be nuts about one of my favorite teams performing so well. But, I’m not.
Recently, I realized how my mood was affecting my life through other’s successes and failures (see where I’m going with this yet?)
I’ve been a fantasy football junkie for years now and for the first time in at least 5 years I’ve decided that I’m not going to “play” fantasy football. It’s one thing to let your mood swing based off your favorite team winning or losing. But, it’s a completely different thing to pretend to have a part in these athletes successes by playing fantasy sports.
My long-winded point here is that this “addiction” I had of viewing sports was a distraction. I would glue myself to a couch hours on end to watch others perform. I’d be happy when they did well and unhappy when they performed poorly.
Now, that I’m not living this way as much I have so much “free time” on my hands. But, see the truth is the time isn’t free time. It’s been my time all along and I just didn’t realize I was letting life pass me by as a spectator.
Living Your Best Life
What are you waiting for?
The time is always now. Too many of us sit and wait. We wait for things to get better or say things to ourselves “I’ll be happy when…”.
STOP. This isn’t any way to live your life!
If you get one thing out of this story, I hope to inspire you to find a spot in your life that is serving as a distraction. Next, finding the courage to rid this distraction of robbing you from your time.
Finally, I’ve been teasing the launch of the Soul Seekr podcast for months now. Well, the time has come!
Since, I have been focused on NOT filling my time on distractions — I’ve put my focus in not only living my life through actual experiences but also planning for this launch of the podcast quite seriously.
